History

This church originally served as the chapel at “Brisbane Theological College” in Nundah, from 1896. The college was renamed in 1910 as “St Francis Theological College” by Archbishop Donaldson. In 1936 Archbishop Wand moved the college to its current site in Milton, and on representation from the the local parish, the chapel was moved to its current site on the corner of Imbros and Olive Streets to serve the needs of the Wavell Heights area.

The original altar housed in the building was taken and placed in the chapel of the Holy Spirit at Milton. This chapel was the Archbishop’s private chapel which evolved to include the students and staff who worked on site. Our church was named the Church of the Holy Spirit in honour of the chapel at the new college site.
